Gum Disease
Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth, and without routine cleaning gum disease can occur. Your gums cushion your teeth from its crown to its root in the jaw and help to support a healthy mouth.
What is Gum Disease
Gum disease begins with bacterial plaque which forms on the teeth every day. It forms at the margin where the teeth and gums meet. If plaque is not removed daily by brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar or calculus.
Tartar that cannot be removed by brushing and flossing then leads to gum infection. In the early stages, gum disease is called gingivitis and the gums may be red and bleed on brushing. As the disease continues and the bone that holds the teeth in place begins to breaks down the teeth loosen and fall out
Fortunately, this can be avoided by attending regular hygiene check-ups at Hampshire Dental Care and maintaining a good daily hygiene routine. Brushing between the teeth, flossing and replacing your toothbrush every three months will also benefit your gum health.
The good news is:
- Gum disease can almost always be prevented,
- If it starts, it can be treated and
- It can even be turned around (or reversed) in its early stages.
If you are concerned of gum disease book your appointment with us and your dentist will do full investigation of your gum health and create a treatment planning for you. Some of the common reasons of gum disease are-
