Under some conditions, a dentist has to pull out your teeth. This is generally done to treat dental problems such as gum infection, bacteria, tooth decay, overcrowding of teeth, etc. Tooth extraction is a very safe process. But patients need to tell the dentist about their medical history, and current medication before the process of pulling teeth starts. Moreover, if you have a medical condition that can put you at risk of infection, then the dentist can suggest antibiotics before the surgery.
Gauze Bandage: Once the tooth extraction is done, the dentist will place the gauze on the site. This is being done to reduce the bleeding and promote the formation of clot in the socket. You need to keep the gauze for some hours after the surgery and it may be changed if it is soaked in blood.
Take Complete Rest: You have to take complete rest and relax for the next 24 hours. Moreover, you can resume your work after two days. If your job requires physical labor, then you need to take more days off from work. During the time period of rest, avoid strenuous activities such as running, cycling, and going to the gym. However, it would be better to ask the dentist when is the right time to resume your daily routine.
What To Eat: It is advised to eat soft foods such as smoothies, juice, soup, scrambled eggs, yogurt, etc. after the surgery until the mouth starts to heal. Gradually you can add food such as rice and oatmeal to your diet. If anything you eat causes pain, then it is not the right thing to eat. Continue with these soft foods after one week of the surgery. Furthermore, also avoid using straws to drink as it can dislodge the blood clot and can result in a dry socket.
Medications: It is crucial to take all the medications prescribed and directed by the dentist. The medicines will help you to heal quickly, and will also prevent the infection. A painkiller will give you relief from the pain so you can relax after the tooth extraction. Applying an ice pack will also help in the reduction of swelling.
In addition to this, you should also avoid smoking as it put you at the risk of developing a dry socket.
