Dentures
What is Denture?
Complete dentures are removable dental appliances that replace all of
the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. The denture procedure
involves several steps to create custom-fitted prosthetic devices for missing
teeth.
First, a comprehensive examination of your oral health is conducted to
assess the condition of your remaining teeth and gums. If any teeth are
present, they may need to be extracted to make way for the dentures.
After extraction and sufficient healing has taken place.
1. Initial Consultation: The process begins with a consultation where the
dentist assesses oral health, discusses options, and determines the best
denture type for the patient.
2. Impressions and Measurements: Precise moulds of the patient's mouth are created
using dental putty or digital scanning technology. These impressions guide the
fabrication of dentures tailored to the individual's unique oral anatomy.
3. Wax Model Fitting: A wax model of the denture is made for the patient
to try. This allows for adjustments to ensure proper fit, bite, and aesthetics.
4. Final Denture Fabrication: Based on the approved wax model, the final
dentures are fabricated. They can be made of acrylic, metal, or a combination
of materials.
5. Placement: Once the dentures are ready, the dentist places them in the
patient's mouth. Minor adjustments may be made to ensure comfort and
functionality.
6. Post-Placement
Follow-up: Patients receive guidance on proper denture care, including cleaning
and maintenance. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to address any concerns
and make necessary adjustments.
Once the dentures are ready, they are fitted
and adjusted during multiple appointments to achieve optimal comfort and
functionality. Proper alignment is crucial for speech and chewing. Patients may
experience initial discomfort as they adapt to wearing the dentures, but
adjustments can be made to enhance the fit.
Regular follow-up appointments are essential
for assessing the dentures' performance and addressing any issues that may arise,
such as changes in jaw structure. Proper oral hygiene is crucial, even with
complete dentures, to maintain overall oral health.
Is
it difficult to adjust with denture?
Generally, it takes couple of weeks to get
used to your new denture after that you will be eat and drink comfortably and
naturally.
What
to expect?
New dentures always feel strange when first
placed in your mouth. Several days or weeks will be required before you get
accustomed to them. Adaptation varies with different persons and often time and
experience are essential before dentures can be worn comfortably and function
effectively.
